Photography Workshop
Arctic Light
FEBRUARY 16 - 23, 2024
SOLD OUT!
Sapna Reddy and I are excited to welcome you to our upcoming week-long photography workshop in the breathtaking Lofoten Islands in February 2024.
This course is intended for photographers of all experience levels who are enthusiastic about capturing the awe inspiring vistas and unspoiled natural beauty of this amazing region.
You'll have the chance to pick up new skills, hone your craft, and travel with like-minded people to the stunning Lofoten Islands to see their breathtaking beauty.
From choosing the proper camera settings to mastering composition and lighting, we will lead you through the process of taking amazing pictures. As well as our approach to post-processing in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
Whether you're a seasoned photographer or you're just getting started, our class is the ideal chance to improve your abilities, broaden your portfolio, and make lifelong memories.
An unforgettable adventure
This workshop is designed to provide you with an unforgettable adventure in the Lofoten Islands.
You essentially have to pack your luggage and fly to Northern Norway. You will then be in the hands of two professional guides who will pick you and the other eager participants up at the airport.
We'll take you to the heart of Lofoten, where we'll spend 3 nights in the beautiful Reine area. You will essentially be living in a postcard of the Lofoten Islands.
Following our nights in Reine, we will relocate our camp to Solsiden Brygger. This allows us easy access to the Lofoten Islands area that we will photograph over the next few days.
We eat breakfast together at both Reine and Solsiden Brygger. This meal is included in your stay with us.
We also have included a tasty multi-course dinner to mark the end of the workshop.
We will often enjoy lunches and dinners together. And throughout the workshop, we will make sure you get the chance to buy groceries or even new mittens if you need to.
This workshop has two guides/instructors and ten participants.
About the itinerary
Regarding the itinerary
The workshop begins with a transfer from Leknes airport (LKN).
You should arrive no later than 12:00 (noon) Friday 16th of Feb. Preferably the day before, if you have that option.
To get to Leknes you have to fly domestic from Oslo (OSL) to Bodø (BOO) and then Leknes (LKN).
We will then drive to Reine Rorbuer, where we will spend 3 nights. This journey will be made in two 9-seater vehicles. It will take approximately 1 hour.
The first three days will be spent shooting in this picturesque area of the Lofoten Islands. The area is well-known for its sea lodges and jagged peaks rising from the sea.
Solsiden Brygger will be our home for the remaining days and nights. We'll have easier access to the rest of the locations we'll be shooting at from here.
Because the weather in the Lofoten Islands can change quickly, we do not plan the locations in any particular order, but rather adapt to the conditions to ensure we get the most out of any scenario we are presented with.
We prioritize capturing the northern lights to ensure that you get the most out of this workshop. The most daring of you will also have the opportunity to photograph the sunrise and the golden hour that follows. As a result, getting up for sunrise will be optional.
Late risers will have the opportunity to catch up on sleep before we gather for a lesson of some kind. We frequently stop for lunch before heading to the sunset/golden hour location.
Following the afternoon shoot, we return to lodge for a delicious dinner. We usually take a few moments after dinner to unwind before heading out to photograph the northern lights.
This year we have added a wildlife component to the workshop where you will have the opportunity to photograph the majestic sea eagle as they hunt and soar over the ocean and adjacent mountains. Being on a comfortable RIB boat out in the ocean also offers us a fresh perspective of the surrounding landscape.
For this activity we will be provided with a warm suit, and together with the clothing you are recommended to have for a workshop like this you will be fine.
With guides who have extensive knowledge of the area you can rest assured you will be exploring unique destinations.
So with majestic landscapes, unforgettable night skies and awe inspiring sea eagles, this workshop will push your limits of creativity and deliver unforgettable experiences.
What will I learn?
During our journey in the field you will learn:
-How to distill the scene before you to create an evocative image.
-Find compelling compositions that convey a strong visual story.
-How to shoot the Aurora Borealis.
-Focus stacking, focal length blend, and perspective blend.
-Mastering the technical details of image capture including bracketing and exposure blend.
-Choice of focal length and creative ways to use lens distortion.
-Using filters.
During the dedicated post processing sessions you will learn:
-How to render colors for Northern lights.
-Blend multiple exposures in photoshop.
-Final image rendition for panoramas using Photoshop.
-Learning how to use luminosity masks for tonal adjustments.
-Specific steps that can be taken in post processing to strengthen the visual pathway through your image.
When and where?
We want you to be at Leknes airport (LKN) at no later than 12:00 (noon) at the latest, February 16th.
Both Norwegian and SAS flies to Bodø (BOO) from Oslo (OSL). From Bodø Airport you will fly with Widerøe to Leknes airport (LKN).
Should you arrive the day prior to the workshop, we recommend you to book at Scandic Leknes Lofoten.
For the departure we will drive to the airport of Evenes in order for you to get the airplane leaving close to noon, Friday 23rd of February.
A departure of Leknes (LKN) is also an option.
We recommend Evenes airport in this case at it has a direct flight to Oslo, making sure you can connect more easily to wherever you go after Norway.
What is included and not?
Included in this workshop is the transportation from and back to the airport, as well as the transportation between locations as well as trips to the town when needed.
The guiding and tutoring both infield as well as in the class room.
Breakfast at both in Reine Rorbuer and Solsiden Brygger.
Due to this being high season we are proud to offer you single room occupancy at Solsiden Brygger, however single room occupancy comes at an additional cost for the 3 nights at Reine Rorbuer.
Lunch and dinners are not included, but we will make sure you will be able to buy groceries or we will eat out as a group.
We to not lend out any gear (camera or clothing), so you need to bring this yourself.
You need your personal travel and health insurances in order.
You need to get yourself to Leknes airport (LKN) and any hotel nights or similar related to that you need to cover yourself.
Any tips, souvenirs or snacks is on you.
If you are unsure whether or not something is included or not, do not hesitate to contact us (contact form below).
What do I bring with me?
Since we will spend a lot of time outside it is important that you bring appropriate winter clothing. 3 layers usually does the trick, but you might get away with 2 layers depending on the temperature.
When we are on the go we usually go with merino wool as the inner layer and insulated pants and jackets, gloves and a cap to keep our ears warm. Your shoes should be winter proof as well.
Temperatures will likely be between 0 and minus 15 celsius (32F and 5F).
It is recommended to bring spikes for your foot wear, as it is very likely it will be icy at some locations.
As for camera gear, we recommend a fast ultra-wide angle lens for landscape and auroras. If this is something you do not have in your arsenal of lenses, something like a 14mm (full frame equivalent) f2.8 does the trick for the northern lights as well as daytime landscapes.
Since we will spend time in different surroundings we are covered from 14mm to 400mm.
Given the ratio of instructors to clients, you can rest assured there is plenty of time for individual instruction and advice both in the field and in post processing. Your images and learning are our top priority.
Bring a sturdy tripod! We cannot stress this enough. It is recommended to have spikes on that tripod, but not mandatory. It is winter, ice and likely windy. A sturdy tripod will be your friend.
You are welcome to bring your drone. You are responsible to follow the national laws related to flying. Info found here
Adapters, converters, chargers etc. You are likely using a different power connector where you come from.
Do bring your laptop with the latest Lightroom and Photoshop installed if you wanna follow along when we do class room sessions.
